Wheel loaders use 25-inch OTR sizes (17.5-25, 20.5-25, 23.5-25) in L-3 rock or L-5 extra-deep patterns. The choice depends on the surface: L-3 for mixed yards and construction sites, L-5 for quarries, recycling plants and anywhere abrasion is the enemy.
Skid-steer and compact loaders run small sizes such as 10-16.5 and 12-16.5 in heavy-duty bias construction, usually 10 or 12 PR. Because a skid steer turns by dragging its wheels, sidewall strength and tread depth decide how long the tyre lasts. Solid skid-steer tyres remove punctures from the equation in demolition and scrap yards.
Telehandlers use industrial R-4 or agricultural-style lug patterns in sizes from 12.5/80-18 up to 460/70R24. For machines that spend most of their time on hard ground, an industrial pattern wears slower; for farm telehandlers on soft yards, a lug pattern gives more grip.
Four-wheel-drive loaders need tyres of the same size, pattern and wear level on each axle, otherwise the drivetrain fights itself. When replacing a single damaged tyre, check the tread depth of its partner and replace in pairs if the difference is large.
